HISTORIC HOUSE RENOVATION IN CAMBRIDGE, MA

Located in the Cambridgeport neighborhood of Cambridge MA, this whole-house renovation repaired, restored and thoughtfully updated a historic home for its new stewards - a young and growing family. The house enfronts historic Dana Square Park (est. 1856), which is a lively community green with mature trees and neighborhood play. Drawing from archival photographs, the exterior facade was repaired, restored and preserved, while being modernized with a high-performing building envelope, including robust weather-proofing, energy-efficient windows, and super insulation. At the rear, new fenestration was designed to open the home to the outdoors - both visually and physically - despite the tight urban site.

Inside, the kitchen was a primary focus. Guided by function-first design principals, the layout prioritizes everyday family life and informal gatherings. A warm material palette of teak wood cabinetry, black pearl granite countertops, and abundant natural and electric lighting, the design creates a bright yet cozy space for family cooking and sharing meals.

The new primary bathroom was added by converting an old, defunct dressing closet. The design preserved an existing plaster archway and enclosed it with a custom steel-and-glass wall - becoming a dramatic architectural feature. Finished with white-and-black marble tile the bathroom combines historic character with a chic, cosmopolitan vibe overlooking the park.
